Your name matters

When I started my writing career, many people advised me to use a pen name. “Others will never be able to remember your entire name. It is too complicated!” I have always begged to differ.

Most North Americans find my name unique but also difficult to pronounce and spell. To me, it is a great thing, because it forces people to pause and ask me questions. They want to know its origin and meaning, which usually leads to interesting conversations. After a while, their curiosity shifts towards my work. They often end up commenting on the fact that the uniqueness of my name has found its way in my writing and work ethic.

The most successful people know the value of a name. So, no matter what you do, always be proud of yours. Because it matters! It is your “trademark,” your brand, something that is part of your identity.

Take advantage of your name. Invest in it. And make it a byword for quality and professionalism.

We in the 21st century have quite possibly in our ignorance or arrogance glossed by the significance attended to and intended by a name. I concur that each and every name has a personal and cultural significance. The literal rendering into ones contemporary language is one step. Understanding that a name is to, in part, reflect ones intended character is yet another. As a dialog opens surrounding this subject, we should be mutually enriched.
