WordPress tutorial: Transfer your content to another WordPress blog

One of the best features of WordPress is the export-import option. This tool allows anyone to transfer content from a WordPress blog to another WordPress blog very easily.

If you have ever wanted to learn how to do it, the article below is for you. I hope you will find it useful.

Log into your Admin panel and scroll down the page. On the left-hand side, look for the “Tools” section. Click on “Export” within it.

In the “Export” window, choose what you want to back up and click “Download Export File.” A new window will open, asking you where to save the XML file on your computer.  This format is also called WordPress eXtended RSS or WXR and contains your posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, and tags.

Now, log into the WordPress blog where you want to transfer your content. Once again, scroll down the admin panel and look for the “Tools” section on the left-hand side. This time, click “Import.”

In the “Import” window, click on “WordPress” (“Import posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, and tags from a WordPress export file”). Usually, the first time, you will be asked to install the Import tool. It takes a few seconds.

Find the file on your computer by clicking “Choose File” in the next window, then “Upload and import.” Follow the instructions and you should be set.

How to export big WordPress XML files into WordPress blogs

When a backup file is bigger than 8 MB, WordPress will not let you import it. You will encounter the following error: “Sorry, there has been an error. File is empty. Please upload something more substantial. This error could also be caused by uploads being disabled in your php.ini or by post_max_size being defined as smaller than upload_max_filesize in php.ini.”

You need to use a program called WordPress Splitter. The application splits a large XML file into smaller files of less than 8 MB each, hence allowing export.

1) Download and install Virtual Basic 6 runtime.

2) Download WordPress Splitter program, extract the file using Winrar and run WPsplitter.exe.

3) Select the XML file you want to split and click “Open.”

4) Watch the magic happen!

5) Import your small files into your new WordPress blog.

Et voilà!

Hello ardianta, you might want to ask your web host provider or contact WordPress about this.
