Selling a product is not about reinventing the wheel. It is about meeting the needs and demands of people in your niche.
In my career, I have seen hundreds of very talented independent artists give up after years of struggle. Why? Because they refused to leave their creativity where it belongs when it was time to sell their products.
Successful professionals certainly know how to use creativity well. However, they are also aware of the fact that creativity can be a marketing killer without proper research. In a nutshell, if you have not taken the time to learn effective ways to promote yourself, you will get stuck at the no-sale level.
There is a time for everything. Be as creative as you want when you write books or record CDs. But, when you are done with your products, ensure that the package is greater than the sum of its parts. Otherwise you will end up being the “famously unknown” guy or gal who could have had a bright career.
