Guest post: How to host a WordPress blog right

The following is a guest post by Ronald Bradley. His bio is at the end of the article.

Hosting a WordPress blog the right way means different things to different people. There may not be one “right” way of doing it, but having a few solid options can help match the hosting with a specific personality type or skill set. There are hosting considerations for the individual host and if the situation calls for it, there is an amazing tool called WordPress MultiUser (MU) that allows for a massive amount of content creation depending on how well the blog owner can attract new content creators.

Very few web hosting companies that have a control panel don’t have WordPress as an easy installation option. As most web hosts have this feature, the installation is very easy and although the default installation is nothing amazing by way of design, the basic functionality is there and managing content is straightforward.

Most hosting companies don’t, however, have a multi-user version of WordPress that is an “easy install”. This is a version of WordPress that other individuals can sign up to “host” their own WordPress blog on the same domain. This unique platform can be a great source of newly generated content. There may be some issues with quality control that a site owner may have to deal with, but screening content creators prior to opening a new site on their behalf is a way to manage that risk.

Once setup, the plugins that an admin can install may include advertising or a slick back-linking plugin to enhance the primary domain and have other users create the supporting content either on a sub-domain or separate directory residing on the root domain. There are a lot of successful WordPress multi-user setups including several universities and professional organizations. It’s definitely something to consider.
