Last year, I had the opportunity to be a guest on #AtomicChat, a weekly Twitter chat centered on content marketing and its importance in the digital world. The conversation was awesome, so when the Atomic Reach crew asked me to co-host again, I did not hesitate!
Tonight, for my second appearance, I talked about Google+ Communities, profiles, and Google Authorship. It was another great hour of insightful conversations — with some trolling thrown in the mix.
Here is the entire interview.
Q1: @cendrinemedia What is a Google+ community and what makes it different from other social media groups? #AtomicChat
— Atomic Reach (@Atomic_Reach) January 29, 2013
A1: G+ Communities = FB Groups on steroids. Can be public/private (privacy can’t be changed) + have unlimited # of members.#atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
A1: GC also have unlimited Discussion Categories, Hangouts, and Events. G+ Pages can participate/create/moderate.#atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
A1: Group notifications are mixed with others so easy to miss. Option: get them by email/use Chrome app: bit.ly/WobGv0 #atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
A1: You can choose to keep activity in GC separate from profile. Uncheck option at bottom of page (bit.ly/WobRGy).#atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
A1: More info on G+ Communities can be found here: goo.gl/sLVSt #atomicchat

Q2: @cendrinemedia Google+ communities came out in Dec. 2012, so how’s the hype now? Are ppl still engaged or dropping off? #AtomicChat
— Atomic Reach (@Atomic_Reach) January 29, 2013
A2: The hype hasn’t decreased. Moderators do a great job fending off spam. Engagement is lower but better than on Facebook.#atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
A2: Some Communities are more active than others. It’s the case with tech and photo groups. G+ is a “geeky” network.#atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
G+ Communities are a haven for content curators, for example. FB Groups are so messy in comparison.#atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
Q3: @cendrinemedia In your experience, how often should you update your community without feeling too “spammy”? #AtomicChat
— Atomic Reach (@Atomic_Reach) January 29, 2013
A3: Frequency doesn’t matter. Quality does. Focus on value and relevancy, not just self-promo. And interact with members.#atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
Q4: @cendrinemedia With all this effort but no engagement on Google+, what could be wrong?#AtomicChat
— Atomic Reach (@Atomic_Reach) January 29, 2013
A4: Probably one of 6 reasons: 1) Too much self-promo 2) No interaction with others (you don’t respond to comments) #atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
A4: 3) Audience doesn’t relate to content 4) You don’t share other ppl’s stuff 5) You use G+ like Facebook 6) Incomplete profile #atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
Q5: @cendrinemedia How much value does a Google+ profile have? #AtomicChat
— Atomic Reach (@Atomic_Reach) January 29, 2013
A5: G+ profiles can be completely optimized for search engines. 1) Write keyword-rich bio + include anchor links to website/blog #atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
A5: 2) Optimize profile pic 3) Add relevant tagline 4) Add misc info (occupation, education…) 5) Link to other profiles #atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
A5: 6) Add link to site/blog and other sites where you contribute 7) Have a book? Add to Links section (bottom of profile) #atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
A5: G+ profiles are a great tool for businesses and professionals ’cause you can’t automate your activity. You have to be human. #atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
A5: It explains why so many don’t like using G+. Your updates show in real-time in people’s newsfeed and search engine results. #atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
Q6: @cendrinemedia What is Google Authorship and how can it help me? #AtomicChat
— Atomic Reach (@Atomic_Reach) January 29, 2013
A6: Google Authorship allows you to link your content to your G+ profile to increase your authority in Google Search results.#atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
A6: Your name and G+ profile photo are displayed next to meta-info. Gives ppl an idea of who the author is before clicking links #atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
A6: To implement GA, visit support.google.com/webmasters/bin…. #atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
A6: GA definitely increases visibility and helps you stand out from competition. #atomicchat
— Cendrine Marrouat (@cendrinemedia) January 29, 2013
