Double standards and the media

media

As a freelance journalist, I am always on the lookout for news items that I can promote. This occupation also allows me to keep an eye on how the media use the power of words to shape perceptions.

I recently came across the following headline: “Well-known poet to read poetry Thursday during Poetry Series.” The headline triggered an intense reflection and I would like to share my thoughts with you…

“Well-known” means “Widely known; familiar or famous.” Usually, the word is used to talk about a person or a thing that has previously been introduced, such as “Maya Angelou, the well-known poet…”

What strikes me here is the fact that “well-known” is in the most important part of an article: its headline. Headlines are the first thing readers see; when well written, they will make them continue reading. In this particular case, I did not even bother clicking on the article. Why? Because a name is an artist’s identity and brand. If the media — the most important tool to reach global audiences — purposely leave out some  names, while other artists get their names constantly mentioned in headlines, then the dice are loaded. And it is totally unfair.

Double standards are dangerous because they are accepted and often justified. The headline I mentioned earlier is a perfect example of the way the media use people’s misconceptions about poetry to fuel their own interests. And this, in itself, is condescending. If the person was that well-known, their name would be worth mentioning…

With that being said, there is a lesson to be learnt, especially for independent artists. After all, they are among those who receive the least media exposure for their work.

To me, this lesson is twofold. First, independent artists must come together as a family and value their work. They must realize that they have powerful voices that can be used to change the status quo. Second, by learning to better communicate with the world around them, they will open new doors and change perceptions.

The debate is open. Do you agree? Disagree? Share your thoughts in the comment section.
