Well, guess what? Spam is back with a vengeance! And this time, it is taking over Facebook. So what can be done to avoid being spammed or at least minimize it?
1) Block the application
Facebook users love the free games and applications provided by Facebook. Those are often problematic because they spread everywhere.
Imagine logging onto your account and seeing your wall plastered with pillows, hearts and other display of Internet affection, as well as links from people for whom Facebook is just part of a global marketing plan. Deleting them all will probably take a while.
If you added the application in the past, look for the “Account” area at the top right corner of your page. In the drop-down menu, click on “Application Settings.” Then, delete the application by clicking on the cross next to it.
Also, when you receive a request to add a new application, there is a link – right under the request – to block it right away.
2) Send a nice warning message
Write an update on your wall, explaining that you do not like being spammed. A lot of people will read it and stop bothering you.
Otherwise, you can also send your contacts a nice private message. Usually, they get the point. Remember that Facebook lets you e-mail 20 people at the same time.
3) Delete the guilty contact(s)
Some individuals are very stubborn. Like telemarketers, they cannot take no for an answer. The more you tell them that you are not interested, the more they come back undeterred. The same thing happens on Facebook.
These individuals obviously do not care about you. So, do not waste your time or energy, just delete them. In fact, it will be beneficial, especially if you are an entrepreneur. Your Facebook page is more likely to be found on Google than your website.
4) Other solutions
Since there is no real effective way to get rid of spam and spammers, you can try the following.
Humor
Humor is the best medicine, as they say. It alleviates any difficult situation. Updating your wall with a funny message may be very effective. Example: “Warning! Add ‘This is a no drive-by spamming zone’ to your status update and leave this on 10 of your friends’ walls within the next two minutes. Otherwise, 150 pillows will hit you and 50 people will ask you to join Farmville…”
The good thing about humor? It draws people’s attention. And it may trigger an interesting discussion too!
