4 tips to become a great content curator

Scoop.it

Content curation is one of the most effective branding tools in social media. It gives people the opportunity to demonstrate their expertise and position themselves as influencers in their fields.

With that said, how does one become a great content curator? Here are four tips to get you started.

Know your niche

If you want to be a great content curator, you must be very knowledgeable about the needs of your niche audience. Be proactive. Use tool like InboxQ to “listen” to people’s questions on Twitter, for example. You can also rely on Google Alerts, Topsy, Social Mention, Twitter Search, LinkedIn Signal, and Google+ Search to monitor specific keywords, find valuable content, and keep abreast of what competitors do.

Focus on relationships

Great content curators love to build relationships and connect with their audiences. They actually keep an eye on who shares what they curate and acknowledge sharers.

Use content curation tools

Great content curators know how to harness powerful tools. Here is a short list:

  • Scoop.it – This “topic-centric” service allows you to compile your favorite resources on specific topics, and arrange them in a newspaper-like format.
  • Paper.li – This tool curates links from Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and RSS feeds, and organizes them into a newspaper-like format that is automatically shared on Twitter.
  • Curated.by – The service allows you to regroup links into collections of topics known as “bundles”.
  • Storify – With Storify, you can create posts by gathering content from Twitter, Facebook, Google, Flickr and more.
  • Pinterest – Pinterest allows you to “pin” and organize your favourite pictures and videos into specific collections called “boards”.

Optimize your content

A great content curator sifts through the huge amount of information available online with two ideas in mind: Delivering the best content they can find and optimizing it to make it relevant to their audience.

They edit and/or rewrite titles; they introduce the information by quoting important passages and/or adding their own comments; and they use great keywords to make the curated content easier to find.

Conclusion

Great content curators share a common trait. They are passionate individuals whose goal is to help others find answers to their questions.

They also value what they do, because they see it as a part of their branding strategy.
